Isra’ and Mi’raj

What is Isra’ and Mikraj?

Isra’ and Mikraj refers to the journey of the Prophet p.b.u.h.. From Masjidil Haram to Masjid Al-Aqsa, where he led all other Prophets in prayer, and his ascension to the heavens, reaching Sidratul Muntaha to talk to Allah. The whole journey, to and fro, happened within one night.

The Significance of Isra’ & Mikraj

A test of faith for believers; past and present.

The journey of Isra’ and Mi’raj was the first real test of faith for the Companions as they were confronted for the first time with an issue that could not be explained by common sense. According to narrations, many of them were shaken, until Abu Bakar r.a. proclaimed his belief in the Prophet’s Night Journey. Through this incident, he attained the title As-Siddiq (The Righteous).

It also serves as a test of faith for us Muslims today; to believe in it means we profess our faith in the power of Allah to carry out miracles for the Prophet, in the existence of Heaven and in the Words of the Prophet himself. It is a proclamation that indeed as humans, our minds are limited, and we need guidance from high above.

Serving God even in the midst of trials and tribulations.

Isra’ & Mikraj happened during the Year of Sorrow, when two of the most beloved people in the life of the Prophet s.a.w. passed away. Firstly his uncle, Abu Thalib who was his guardian when he was younger and a strong supporter in his life, and secondly, his beloved wife Khadijah, the mother of all of his children besides Ibrahim, and the pillar of his life before and after Prophethood. This came at a time when opposition against the Muslims was very strong.

Yet, despite going through such difficult moments, the Prophet s.a.w. stayed strong and carried on serving Allah’s Command, and persevered in delivering the message of God, such that he even went to Taif to call them towards Allah. And when he was turned away hurt by them, he chose to forgive them, and instead prayed that they will still accept His Message one day.

Isra’ & Mikraj was a way of Allah to regard the Prophet p.b.u.h. highly for his determination despite all the trials and tribulations faced.

The Gift of Daily Prayers

The 5 daily prayers were enjoined during Isra’ & Mikraj.

In a hadith on Isra’ & Mikraj narrated by Imam An-Nasa’i, the Prophet p.b.u.h. shared to Prophet Musa a.s. that Allah enjoined fifty prayers on him every day and night.

Musa a.s. replied, ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him to reduce it.’ The Prophet kept going back and forth between Allah and Musa a.s., until Allah said:

‘O Muhammad, they are five (prayers each day and night), and they are fifty (prayers in reward).’
